Chapter 13

I push myself into the room, and as my headlamp illuminates more, I wish I hadn’t. Searching for anything to stop my momentum, I finally find a grate on the ceiling to anchor myself. Now that I’m stationary, I can only look around in disbelief.

“Do you remember anything in the brief about the type of research they did here?”

“No, why?” Braun asks in turn.

I scan around before answering. The first thing to catch my eye is a bloodied bone saw floating at eye level. Past that are various scalpels and other medical implements. What really stops my search is the half-dissected, frozen corpse just past my left shoulder.

“I think I just climbed into a medical research floor. Is data strong enough to link to my helmet camera?”

I hear Braun tapping away at his screen before he answers. “No, it looks like we're voice only.”

“Damn it. This is straight out of a horror movie,” I say after spotting two more partially dissected corpses. Although a couple had the traditional chest cavity opening, leaving their frosted-over organs open to the air, most looked like their heads were the subject of the investigation. Desensitized to most gore and human generated nastiness from years spent on the battlefield watching what kind of wounds man was capable of inflicting on one another, I float toward the corpse on my left to get a better look. The head is missing its skullcap and has several instruments and wires protruding from the folds of its exposed brain. I can only shake my head at the apparent waste of life before moving on with the mission. “I’m pushing through now.”

“Take it easy, don’t want anything cutting your suit.”

Being much more cautious, I start picking my way forward. Every once in a while, I have to push some cutting implements out of the way to prevent them from puncturing my suit. Just out of reach of the far door, I feel a gentle bump on my shoulder. I look over to find the corpse of a twenty-something woman, ribcage splayed open with a spreader. I scrunch down and rotate, gently kicking against the body to propel myself the rest of the way to the hatch. I had seen a corpse near the hatch when entering the floor, but assumed it was just floating in front. Upon closer inspection, I find that the body has frozen to the bulkhead where the hatch meets the wall.

Although numb to the sights and sounds of human suffering from the campaigns I’ve taken part in, I’m still a little put off when I have to interact with it. Hopes of a clean escape from the floor are dashed after a few attempts to free the body and open the hatch behind it. Violence is human nature and I’ve never viewed myself as above it, but I know where the line is and desecrating a corpse seems to be a long jump over it.

Clipping myself to a retention point on the top of the wall, I begin trying to pry the body off the hatch.
